New gutter installation

Seamless aluminum gutters sized for the roof, for replacements, additions and houses that never had enough gutter.

New gutter installation means hanging seamless aluminum gutters roll-formed on site to the exact length of each run, with downspouts placed and sized for the roof above them. Fredericksburg-area homeowners usually call for it when builder gutters have failed, when an addition or porch needs gutters, or when the existing system simply can't keep up in a storm.

Signs it's time for new gutters

  • Overflow in steady rain even when the gutters are clean
  • Several joints or corners leaking at once
  • Runs that sag or hold standing water
  • Gutters bent from ladders, limbs or snow sliding off the roof
  • Sections of the roof with no gutter at all

Why do so many local houses need them?

Much of the housing around Fredericksburg went up quickly as Stafford and Spotsylvania grew. Builder gutters are often the minimum: 5-inch gutters, a downspout at each corner and long runs with roof valleys dumping into a single spot. With about 43 inches of precipitation a year and summer thunderstorms on top, that setup overflows. Older homes in the city have the opposite problem: gutters that have been patched for decades.

What should a good installation include?

  • Removal of old gutters and a check of the fascia behind them
  • Gutter size chosen for each roof section
  • Enough downspouts, including extras near valleys
  • Hidden hangers spaced closely and screwed into solid wood
  • Correct pitch toward each outlet
  • A plan for where each downspout discharges

What changes the cost?

  • Total feet of gutter and number of corners
  • Gutter size and aluminum gauge
  • Number and size of downspouts
  • Fascia repair found after the old gutters come down
  • Adding guards or buried drains in the same visit

New gutters or repair?

If one or two spots fail on otherwise good gutters, repair them. If problems are showing up all around the house, or the gutters are too small for the roof, replacement costs less over time. Pairing new gutters with micro-mesh guards avoids a second visit.

Common questions

Do I need 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

Many houses use 5-inch K-style gutters. Large or steep roof sections, long runs and valleys often call for 6-inch gutters with larger downspouts. Ask the installer to explain the choice.

Can new gutters match my trim color?

Seamless aluminum comes in many colors. Bring a trim sample or ask to see the color chart.

Do new gutters need a permit in Virginia?

Gutters aren't on the statewide list of work exempt from permits, but building officials can exempt minor work. Call the building office for your address.
