Underground downspout drains

Buried pipe that takes roof water across the yard instead of dumping it at the foundation.

Underground downspout drains connect your downspouts to buried solid pipe that carries roof water across the yard to a pop-up emitter in the lawn or to an open outlet downhill. For Fredericksburg-area homes where downspouts empty onto walks, patios or flat side yards, a buried line keeps water from soaking the ground right at the foundation.

What's involved?

  • A utility locate requested through Virginia 811 before digging
  • A trench from each downspout, sloped to keep water moving
  • Smooth solid pipe, with a cleanout where it helps
  • A pop-up emitter, a daylight outlet on a slope, or another approved discharge point
  • Backfill and patching the lawn

Signs you need one

  • Water pooling along the foundation after rain
  • A damp crawl space or basement after storms
  • Downspout splash eroding beds or undermining a walk
  • Extensions that get run over by the mower or kicked loose
  • Ice on a walk or driveway where a downspout empties in winter

Why it matters around Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg sits near the fall line of the Rappahannock, where the hilly Piedmont meets the flatter Coastal Plain, so lots range from sloped to fairly flat. On a flat lot, water from a downspout has nowhere to go and sits beside the house. On a sloped lot, the downhill wall can catch water from uphill. With about 43 inches of precipitation a year, a lot of roof water needs a destination.

What affects the cost?

  • Number of downspouts and the length of each run
  • Cutting under or around walks, patios and driveways
  • Soil, roots and rock in the trench path
  • Type of outlet and how much lawn needs patching

We don't set prices. The installer looks at the lot and quotes the work.

Buried line or simple extension?

If the yard slopes away and the downspout can empty onto open lawn, an above-ground extension may be enough. If the water needs to cross a walk or get past a flat area, a buried line is the cleaner fix. Pair it with gutter guards so leaves don't end up in the pipe.

Common questions

What is a pop-up emitter?

A cap at the end of a buried downspout line that lifts open when water pushes through and closes when flow stops, so water spreads onto the lawn.

Do underground drains clog?

They can if leaves get into them. Gutter guards upstream and solid, smooth pipe with cleanouts help a lot.

Does the installer have to call 811?

Yes. Virginia requires notice to Virginia 811 before excavation so buried utilities can be marked.
